The Shelby Lady Huskies entered subdistrict play at York on Monday, November 2nd with a victory over Nebraska Lutheran in four sets. They then turned around and played a tough Exeter-Milligan team. The Lady Huskies won the first set before losing their momentum and fell short the next three sets. Their end-of-the-season record stands at 13-17.
The Nebraska Lutheran game proved to be a strong offensive game on both sides.
"We did a nice job of staying positive and finishing the first set at a tempo we needed for the rest of the match," commented Coach Nancy Hegi-Cuba. "Olivia came up big offensively. We stuck to the game plan and showed the will to win. Maddie sprained an ankle late in the 4th set and we pieced things together well to finish the match."
Jordann Scow led in kills with 6 followed by Olivia Johnson, DeAnna Cyza and Kiley Samek each with 4. Makenzi Kuhnel and Joce Hopkins served 13 points apiece and Lindsay Coffin contributed 12. Samek chipped in 17 set assists. Coffin was huge in the back row with 25 digs, Hopkins came up with 16 and Kuhnel added 12. Cyza finished with 3 blocks and Samek added 2.
The Lady Huskies were forced to play Exeter-Milligan without their lead blocker Maddie Scow.
"I'm very proud of the kids for making the necessary adjustments," said Coach Nancy Hegi-Cuba. "We moved people around to cover for Maddie who was hurt in the first match and everyone was a contributor. We showed great poise in this match and continued improvement from even a week ago to extend Exeter-Milligan to four sets."
Jordann Scow and Olivia Johnson led with 9 kills apiece followed by DeAnna Cyza with 8. Makanna Davis scored 18 points with 6 ace serves, Makenzi Kuhnel had 20 points and 2 aces, Lindsay Coffin had 17 points with 4 aces, and Joce Hopkins also had 17 points with 6 aces. Kiley Samek came up with 27 set assists. Coffin led in digs with 13 followed by Kuhnel and Hopkins with 5 apiece. Maddie Scow had 7 blocks and Cyza came up with 2.
