The Osceola Alumni Association hosted their fifth annual alumni basketball and volleyball tournaments over Easter weekend. All games were played on Saturday, March 22nd with women’s volleyball at the high school and men’s basketball at the old auditorium.
There were seven teams entered in each tournament for a total of 14 teams this year, which is the most in the five-year history of the event.
On the basketball side of the day, Z’s Dynasty emerged as the champion with a 63-50 finals victory over Icy Hot. The champions outscored the runner-ups 37-26 in the second half after holding a 26-24 halftime lead. Nathan Peterson led Z’s Dynasty with 18 points. Mark Gustafson and Jason Zelasney added 14 points apiece for the winners.
Reed Johnston led Icy Hot with a game high 19 points. Rusty Frahm also reached double figures with 15 points.
Other team members of Z’s Dynasty were Bob Zelasney, Dan Kucera, Mike Neujahr, Andy Roberts, Doug Burritt, Doug Rathjen, and Clete Arasmith.
Other team members of Icy Hot were Tim Girard, Ryan Kieffer, Brock Tonniges, Mark Gabel, Kevin Peterson, Blair Page, and Thad Boden.
All teams in the basketball tournament played two round robin games apiece which determined the seeding for the single elimination tournament. Z’s Dynasty emerged champions from the fourth seed. Icy Hot was the second seed after round robin play.
On the volleyball side, all seven teams were entered into a double elimination tournament. The championship team consisted of Julie Miller, Lori Wyman, Terri Carlson, Mindy Bryan, Kendra Gustafson, and Susan Leimser.
The runner up team members were Abby Zelasney, Alyssa Willits, Shayla Retzlaff, Jenna Rieken, Lauren Tonniges, Megan Willits, Tami Coffin, and Cassie Kilgore.
This year’s tournament raised over $700 for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Thanks go out to everyone who participated including Sarah Johnson and Julie Miller for organizing the volleyball tournament and to Doug Burritt for organizing the basketball. This is the second year that the tournaments have been held on Easter weekend and plans are already being made for Easter weekend in 2009. This event has been well received and should continue to grow in participants in the years to come.
