Raymond, L. Vrbka, age 85, of Shelby, Nebraska, passed away June 17, 2010 at the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Memorial services will be held Monday, June 21, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Father John Rooney officiating. Rosary will be held Sunday, June 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola and Stromsburg has been entrusted with arrangements.
Raymond was born May 29, 1925 to Joseph and O'Tillie (Sedlak) Vrbka in Brainard. The family lived in Brainard, David City and then moved to Shelby. Raymond graduated from Shelby High School.
He then served in the United States Navy from October 9, 1943 to May 6, 1946. Raymond received the Purple Heart while serving his country.
He then returned to the Shelby area and began working for Charles Augustin hauling cattle and farming.
On February 17, 1949 he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Augustin. To this union eight children were born. They resided one and a half miles north of Shelby where Raymond farmed and raised cattle. He retired in 1999 and began working as a part time courtesy driver for Ernst Auto Center in Columbus.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby and Shelby Legion Post #296.
He enjoyed his grandchildren, camping, playing cards, going to the boats and visiting with people.
Survivors include his wife Betty of Shelby; three sons Jerry (Peg) Vrbka of Shelby, Callen Vrbka of Shelby and Andy (Jodi) Vrbka of Clarks; five daughters Susan (Gary) Ott of Osceola; Judy (Kevin) McWilliams of Springfield, Missouri, Lori Freeman of Lincoln, Angela (Virgil) King of Shelby and Nancy (Michael) Sigsbee of Kansas City, Missouri; 19 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; one sister Evelyn Patterson of Fort Collins, Colorado; five brothers Leonard (Lois) Vrbka of Fairbanks, Alaska, Dr. Don (Peg) Vrbka of Columbus, LaVern (Polly) Vrbka of Millard, Bob (Dottie) Vrbka of Ravenna, and Gary (Candy) Vrbka of Shelby; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and O'Tillie; son-in-law LaVerne Kuhnel and one brother-in-law Pat Patterson.
