Betty Hohndorf

Betty Hohndorf, 82, of Columbus, Nebraska, (formerly of Shelby, Nebraska) died Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Cottonwood House in Columbus. She went to be with her Lord and has been reuited with her husband and son. She can see clearly and breath easily once again.
The funeral was held on Monday, January 23 at 10:30 AM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus with Pastor Dusty Sprague officiating. Interment was in the Shelby Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Shelby Rescue Department. Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus was in charge of arrangements.
Betty was born June 21, 1929, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Harold and Mae (Schmid) Fyfe. She grew up in the Shelby area and graduated from Shelby High School in 1946. After finishing high school she taught in a country school for two years and moved to Lincoln and worked at Sears for a short time. She married Leslie Hohndorf on June 26, 1949, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Shelby. To this union three children were born - Robert, Helen, and Bonnie.
Betty and Les bought their home place in 1954. She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and later the United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Shelby Auxiliary Club.
Betty had many interests. She had her garden, flowers, and yard work that she enjoyed. She also worked on many crafts. She belonged to a neighborhood coffee club, weekly card club, and a monthly card club. She gathered the neighborhood news for the Shelby Sun, the local paper. When the grandchildren started arriving, she enjoyed watching them and having them around. She was a farm wife that did all the usual duties - cooking, taking lunch to the field, running after parts, and hauling corn during harvest.
Betty is survived by her daughter Helen Conkling-Hohndorf of Shelby; grandson Jeremy Smith of Shelby and great-grandchildren Derrick Langer of Osceola, Spencer Smith of Rising City, and Mallory Smith of Beatrice; grandson Justin Smith and great-grandchildren Taylor, Hailey, and Sydney Smith of Shelby; granddaughter Jamie (Mike) Henggeler of Columbus; daughter Bonnie (Reg) Nekl of Shelby and grandson Joshua (Jennifer) Nekl of Boston, MA, granddaughter Megan (Kelly) Logan and great-grandchildren Makenzie and Bailey Logan of Columbus; granddaughter Libby (Adam) Bellamy and great-granddaughter Giana Bellamy of Abu Dhabi, UAE; granddaughter Betsy Nekl of Bellwood; sisters Shirley (Francis) Johnson of Central City, Doris Fyfe of Omaha, and Carol Goranson of Scottsbluff.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Mae Fyfe, husband Leslie Hohndorf, son Robert Hohndorf, brother Billie Fyfe, sister Mary Rudolph, and twin stillborn brothers.
