Tomasevicz Gets a Hometown Hero Welcome from Alma Mater -

Olympic Gold Medalist Curt Tomasevicz signs each autograph with a smile during his visit to Shelby Public School on Monday back in his hometown.

The last several weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind for Curt
Tomasevicz for some obvious reasons. Competing in the Winter Olympics,
winning the gold medal in the Four Man Bob Sled event, going on the
“Late Show with David Letterman” and the non-stop personal appearances
throughout the area, not to mention, the countless if not endless,
media interviews and requests for personal visits. Through all of this
he has remained the same personable, well spoken, articulate young guy,
who is fiercely competitive and intensely proud of his hometown of
Shelby, Nebraska. . . .

Ericson's Hardware Site of Weekend Break-In -

Vandals caused extensive damage to a fireproof file cabinet at Ericson's Cash Hardware during a robbery which occurred last Friday night in Stromsburg.

Late Friday night, March 5, 2010 or in the early hours of Saturday,
March 6, 2010, vandals broke into Ericson's Cash Hardware in Stromsburg.
After an investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, it was
determined that there were at least three suspects involved in the
break-in. One of the suspects gained entry to the store by breaking in
through the front door. He/she then opened the back door from the
inside to let in the other culprits. . . .

Polk County Sheriff Dwaine Ladwig was recently recognized for 25 years
of service to the Nebraska Amateur Softball Association and the youth
softball team of Nebraska.
"Dwaine is well known for his straight forward, no-nonsense approach to
enforcement of the playing code," said State Commissioner Joe Patterson
of Hastings. . . .

Shelby takes pride in hometown athlete

Shelby fans filled local businesses as they cheered Curt and Team Holcomb on to victory. Over 150 people packed inside A & B and around 100 filled the Shelby Hotel and watched the race.

It wasn't just the win that made the Shelby fans proud.
It was all about the athlete.

Shelby supporters, nearly all 690 of them, gathered in the streets of
town last Saturday evening to show their support and watch their
hometown favorite, Curtis Tomasevicz win the gold in the 4-man bobsled
race at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. . . .

Stromsburg Swimming Pool to be Closed for 2010 -

The Stromsburg City Council in cooperation with the City Park Board
held an informational meeting at the Cross County High School on Monday
evening to discuss the most current situation with the city swimming
pool in Buckley Park. The decision has been made not to open the pool
this year. There have been significant obstacles to overcome the last
few years to get the pool functioning in a way that meets the criteria
set down by state and federal statutes. The repair issues have come to
a point where it is no longer feasible to fix the problems that would
allow the pool to pass government inspection. . . .
