Robotics Competition Descends on Stromsburg - Feb 1, 2012 - 1:06 PM

A robotics competition will be held at Cross County on Feb. 18. To help the public better understand the robotics competitions, middle school students (l to r) Zane Dravitzki, Tanner Lamoree, Brady Langemeier, Bailey Pinkelman and Coach Ken Booth help to demonstrate how the competition works at the robotic soup supper that was held on Sunday. At the meet on Saturday, 24 robots will compete on two playing fields as are pictured here, trying to score points by placing barrels and balls in the goals. This event is free and open to the public. Come see the innovation of tomorrow's engineers and cheer on the Cougar teams.
A unique event with unusual competitors will be on display this Saturday, February 4, in Stromsburg. The competitors will be robots – guided in their actions by student teams.
Student teams from several Nebraska and Colorado high schools and middle schools will be competing in the Cross County VEX Robotics Tournament Saturday at Cross County High School. Competitions of this type have taken place since 2006 and have evolved into national and world competitions. . . .

Silent Auction to Benefit Local Art Gallery - Feb 1, 2012 - 12:56 PM
A Silent Auction will be held Friday, February 3rd and Saturday, February 4th from 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. at The Rose Colored Glass, 403 Commercial Street, in Stromsburg.
The proceeds from the auction will benefit the Nebraska Artist Cooperative (NAC), which will be opening a non-profit Art Gallery in Stromsburg.
There will also be an informative meeting about the Nebraska Artist Cooperative at the Stromsburg Public Library at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3rd and again on Saturday, February 4th at 11:00 a.m.

Karen (Sterup) Johnson Benefit Sunday, February 5th - Feb 1, 2012 - 12:54 PM
A benefit for the family of Karen (Sterup) Johnson is planned for Sunday, February 5th in the ag building at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Osceola.
Hamburgers, baked beans, chips, dessert and drinks will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a free will donation.
A live auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. Some of the items include seed corn and soybean seed, Terry Redlin pictures, Ipod Touch, Kindle Fire, television, baskets of items, Husker blankets, wreath, gift cards, and much, much more.  
Karen (Sterup) Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late August, 2011. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments and had numerous hospital stays for various procedures and tests. She passed away December 15th, 2011.
Karen is survived by her husband, Bob and two children Brandon, 18 and Breanna, 16 of Osceola.
"We have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the people of Osceola and the surrounding communities," Bob Johnson commented.

Second Lot Sold in Elementary Park Subdivision - Jan 24, 2012 - 3:06 PM

The Elementary Park Subdivision has sold its second lot. To date, lots 12 and 18 have been sold and paid for and interest has been shown in several more lots.
Dirtworx has completed their demolition of the elementary school and the area is ready for the next step which is to set up the paving district. At the City Council meeting on Monday, Jan. 23 the Council approved Ordinance No. 1044 to create a paving district for the Elementary Park Subdivision. A hearing date has been set for Feb. 27  to hear any objections to the paving district. As soon as the plans and specifications for project, which includes paving, storm sewer, water and sanitary sewer are complete, bids will be let for the project. The City is hoping to be able to award a contract at the March 26 City Council meeting.
