Jordan Went, a Family and Consumer Science Education major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is about half way through her 12-week internship with Amy Peterson, Colleen Pallas and Karen Langemeier at the Polk County Extension Office in Osceola. She is enjoying spending her summer months working with local 4-H members as part of her teaching requirement.
"It is great to have someone who is so willing to do anything and everything," commented Amy Peterson, Polk County Extension Educator.
Jordan has taken part in five weeks of workshop training with Polk County 4-H'ers and Clover Kids. She has been involved in hands-on education with the youth and has taught Beginning Baking and T-Shirt Treasures classes as well as several other workshops.
"I am impressed with how active the parents are with their kids in 4-H," Jordan added. "I also can't believe how many kids are involved in 4-H in Polk County. How awesome!"
Jordan is originally from Creston, NE, and has been actively involved in 4-H and livestock projects in Platte County throughout her life. She has always loved 4-H and the many things it has to offer.
Jordan is excited for the Polk County Fair which will be held July 28-August 1. She is currently working on posters for the fair, and is anxious to see the projects the 4-H'ers will be exhibiting.
"I've helped so many kids work on so many projects, I can't wait to see how they are judged at the fair," Jordan said. "I'm kind of competitive, so I am anxious to see how things turn out."
Jordan said she is willing to help out with anything at the fair the Extension ladies need help with, except in the poultry barn. "I hate birds!" she said.
Polk County 4-H'ers have enjoyed getting to know Jordan and have loved having her here this summer. She has certainly been a welcome addition and her enthusiasm and energy has helped make 4-H extra fun for kids of all ages.
Jordan is impressed with how wonderful all the people are here in Polk County and how supportive they are of the 4-H program. She has been fortunate to stay in Polk County during her internship with a host family who provides her with room and board in exchange for animal chores.
Jordan will continue her internship in Polk County through August, then will return to Lincoln to finish her senior year of college. "Then I can decide if I want to teach in the classroom or take the 'Extension route' and work more hands-on."
Amy, Colleen and Karen have had a great time with Jordan and are thrilled she was given the opportunity to come to Polk County for her intern experience. They invite everyone to say hello and welcome Jordan to the Polk County Fair.
