The Four Corners Health Department and the Polk County Health Department held a random seat belt check at Cross County High School on Tuesday morning, May 6th, just outside the school’s parking lots in front and back of the building.
Four Corners Health Department received a grant to fund this event through the Injury Prevention Program with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The grant allowed the Health Department adequate funding to do a seat belt check at one school in each of the four counties. In Polk County, Cross County Community School was chosen as they have the highest enrollment of high school students.
A total of 110 checks were completed, including students, parents, faculty and staff. Overall results found that only 33% were wearing seat belts, and 67% were unbelted. The results of individuals seated inside the vehicle are as follows:
Driver
Belted (30 checked) 36%
Unbelted (53 checked) 64%
Front Seat Passenger
Belted (4 checked) 19%
Unbelted (17 checked) 81%
Back Seat Passenger
Belted (2 checked) 33%
Unbelted (4 checked) 66%
The statistics are quite frightening, as the State of Nebraska does have a law requiring all individuals in a vehicle to wear their seat belts.
Both local health departments encourage parents to consider this survey a wake-up call. Please remind your children to wear their seat belts at all times, and also to set a good example for them by wearing yours. Remember - seat belts save lives
