Last year, the Rising City school board began entertaining proposals to merge with either David City or Shelby. Recently, the district asked Shelby and David City school boards to send updated proposals again.
The board decided to turn to residents after its members tied twice on merger proposals last week. First a merger with Shelby was proposed, then David City. Both measures tied 3-3.
The Rising City district is now planning to conduct a straw poll to give the board direction on the merger. The board still would have to vote on the merger proposals, but it will heed the sentiment of district residents.
Ballots will be sent to residents, who will be asked to return them to the district before the board's March 15th meeting.
According to sources, the straw poll will not be a certified election.
Shelby is proposing to keep a middle school open in Rising City for as long as possible, with students being bused from Shelby.
David City propose to keep an elementary school going in Rising City while exploring a "magnet school" concept to utilize the high school.
