James Kamrath of Shelby has been selected as a winner in America's Farmers Grow Communities program, which gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. The donations are available through the Monsanto Fund.
Kamrath has designated the Shelby Scholarship Fund located in Shelby to receive the award in Polk County.
"This is the third time Jim applied for the $2,500 through Montanto," Jean Kamrath said. "When he was notified that he won, we were both so excited. We helped start the Shelby Scholarship Fund, which was formerly Shelby Dollars for Scholars, 10 years ago and we had nothing. This money will help a lot of students."
The $2,500 donation was awarded to the school on Friday, February 10th. Michael Wardyn from Monsanto presented the check to Jean Kamrath and Jeff Kuhnel, co-presidents of the Shelby Scholarship Fund. Several seniors at Shelby-Rising City Public School also helped accept the check, as they plan to apply for the Shelby Scholarship. Jim was trying to save a baby calf and was unable to be at the presentation.
"Every year, the funds recycle," Wardyn added. "The new year starts again in June and farmers can reapply for another $2,500 to donate to their communities."
In 1,245 eligible counties in 39 states, farmers could win $2,500 for their favorite community non-profit. The Monsanto Fund expects to invest more than $3.1 million in local communities.
The America's Farmers Grow Communities program is part of a broad commitment by the Monsanto Fund to highlight the important contributions farmers make every day to our society by helping them grow their local communities. Nearly 60,000 farmers participated in the second annual Grow Communities program, which is designed to benefit nonprofit groups such as ag youth, schools and other civic organizations.
