Deb and Steve Murphy of Bellwood recently purchased CJ's Restaurant in Osceola from Carol and Jerry Thelen. The Murphy's officially took over the business on July 2, 2010, with their opening day being Tuesday, July 6th. The new name of the business is Murph's Place.
The Murphy's make a great team in the kitchen, as Steve is the chief meat cook and griller, and Deb takes care of the side dishes and the baking.
Deb brings years of food service managing and catering experience to Murph's Place, as she has previously served as kitchen manager at the Madison County Facility and also managed the Legion Club in Columbus.
Steve has always been a whiz in the "meat" department. He makes all of his own sauces and marinades from scratch using his own secret recipes.
Murph's Place continues to offer the favorites Carol used to serve at CJ's, plus they have added a few new things to the menu. Steve makes a breakfast burrito which is quickly becoming a farmer's favorite, a savory philly steak sandwich, and a mean 1/4 lb. Nathan hot dog with his own homemade Coney Island chili sauce.
The Murphy's also offer a breakfast special on their famous plate-sized pancakes, which they refer to as "hubcaps." If you can say "hubcap pancake" 5 times FAST, your pancake is free!!! "Nobody has been able to do it yet," Deb said.
Steve and Deb will be moving to Osceola before school starts this fall, and are very interested in being an active part of the Osceola community. Their daughters Kaylee, age 12 and McKenna, age 10 will be in the 6th and 5th grade, respectively, this fall at Osceola Public Schools. The girls help out at the restaurant in many capacities.
"We have felt welcome here since the first day we walked in the door," Steve commented. "This is definitely a supportive community and we have enjoyed meeting the people here."
The Murphy's are still looking for a dishwasher, wait staff and evening cashier so they can start being open evenings and weekends. Their plan is to be open for evening meals Tuesday through Saturday featuring Steve's famous steaks, and Saturday night they will offer a prime rib special. They are proud to be serving all natural steaks and roasts from the local cattle ranch of Dr. Ray Metzner.
Steve and Deb also plan to do some nightly specials. They would like to have a "wing night" featuring Steve's special recipe hot wings. Steve makes three different sauces for different tastes—fire sauce, sweet and tangy sauce and sweet and smoky sauce, one of which is sure to please the palate. Kaylee and McKenna say they have lots of friends when their dad makes his homemade wings!!! The Murphy's will also be adding homemade pizza to their evening menu.
Murph's Place offers a full breakfast menu, along with daily lunch specials and a full grill. They also feature fresh squeezed lemonade which is made fresh daily. All orders are available for dine in or carry out.
The Murphy's welcome outside catering events and small catering parties in their dining room. They invite the public to hold their small groups, birthday parties, card clubs and other events at Murph's Place.
Current hours at Murph's Place are Monday through Saturday 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Steve and Deb are grateful to Carol and Jerry for helping make the transition go so smoothly. "Carol took such good care of her customers and went out of her way to please them," Steve said. "It is very important to her that they are well taken care of, and we will continue to please them the best we can. Carol was so well liked.....we have big shoes to fill."
The Murphy's appreciate the support of the Osceola community at their new establishment and feel very welcome.
To inquire about employment at Murph's Place, stop in and talk to Steve or Deb at 441 Hawkeye Street in Osceola.
