An assembly was held last Friday, May 2nd at the Cross County Middle School in Benedict to honor a faculty member who deserved special recognition for promoting a writing project which is open to middle school students.
Mrs. Gail Gropp, English teacher at Cross County Middle School in Benedict, was presented with two roses from Rose Wozniak, Youth Chairman from the VFW Auxiliary 1609 in York, in appreciation for all she has done to promote the Patriot’s Pen project.
The Patriot’s Pen project is an essay contest sponsored by the Auxiliary. The contest takes place in the fall, and the winners, which are selected by Auxiliary members, read their essays at the Veteran’s Day program in November.
Mrs. Gropp incorporates the Patriot’s Pen project into her writing assignments for her class. She stresses the importance of good writing techniques to her students and feels this essay project is a good way to exercise these skills, as well as honor those who have served our country.
Many schools have done away with the Patriot’s Pen project, but Mrs. Gropp still believes this is an important aspect of writing. She has been involved in the essay contest for approximately 10 years. Benedict and Cross County schools have produced essay winners at both the District and the State levels.
The students and faculty members at Cross County Middle School felt Mrs. Gropp was very deserving of this recognition. She is a strong supporter of the Auxiliary, as well as a dedicated teacher to her students.
