On Sunday morning, June 15, 2008, the Stromsburg Volunteer Fire Department was summoned to a house fire at the home of Gary and Jean Waller, who reside at 311 E. 4th Street in Stromsburg.
After an investigation by the State Fire Marshal, lightning was determined to be the cause of the fire.
The fire apparently started in the attic and in a second floor closet. It was contained to the structure.
The home sustained significant structure damage, mainly in the upstairs, and water damage throughout. Smoke damage was minimal.
According to Stromsburg Volunteer Fire Chief Tim Pallas, most of the fire was extinguished with interior attacks, and there was not a lot of content damage, especially on the main floor. There were no injuries reported.
Osceola, Benedict and Polk Volunteer Fire Departments were called in to provide mutual aid.
The American Red Cross provided food and assistance to the Waller family as well as the fire and rescue workers.
The extent of the damage has not yet been determined.
