Alan Thomas Hofer, age 26, of Clarks, NE, died as the result of a car accident Thursday, July 8th, 2010 in Merrick County, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
Hofer was northbound on a gravel road in a 1992 Ford Ranger pickup when he went through an unmarked intersection and was hit on the driver's side by an eastbound 1995 Chevy pickup driven by Anthony J. Beck, 20, the patrol said.
Hofer was taken to Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City where he died from injuries.
Beck was treated for minor injuries at the Central City hospital.
It is unknown whether either was wearing a seat belt.
Hofer is formerly of Seward, NE. He has taught industrial technology for two years at High Plains Community School in Polk. He was also the one-act play instructor and served as the middle school and youth head wrestling coach and high school assistant wrestling coach.
"Alan was great at building relationships with kids," commented High Plains Superintendent Stan Hendricks. "He had an amazing decorum with his students."
Hofer is a 2002 graduate of Seward High School, a 2003 graduate of Southeast Community College-Milford, and a 2008 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010 at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward with Father Rand Langhorst as Celebrant. Interment was in the Seward Cemetery. Zabka Funeral Home in Seward was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials of the donor's choice are in care of the family.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, this is the sixth fatal accident in Nebraska since the beginning of July and the 13th since June 27, 2010.
