Polk County was visited by an eight member team from FEMA. They were here to access the damage from the recent flooding. The team split up between the communities of Polk, Stromsburg, Osceola and Shelby visiting homes which had potential flood damage. They went door to door talking with residents asking them how much damage they had and if insurance was going to cover any of it.
As the FEMA team visited with residents in Osceola they heard the same types of stories of hardship and loss as in many other areas. Many of the stories are like that of Mischelle Hancock of 461 N. Valley Street where with eight feet of water in the basement she lost her children’s momentos and keepsakes from the years when they were growing up. These are things that insurance and aid cannot replace. But, the FEMA team also sees positives from the flooding as tragedies such as this can bring a community together, neighbor helping neighbor.
Following the visit the team was to compile a report on the damage findings. It should be known soon if Polk County will receive any aid.
