Late Friday night, March 5, 2010 or in the early hours of Saturday, March 6, 2010, vandals broke into Ericson's Cash Hardware in Stromsburg.
After an investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, it was determined that there were at least three suspects involved in the break-in. One of the suspects gained entry to the store by breaking in through the front door. He/she then opened the back door from the inside to let in the other culprits.
The vandals stole cash and checks totalling around $1000, Sterling Anderson said, owner of Ericson's Cash Hardware. They damaged and broke into a fireproof file cabinet and locked storage cabinets in the office. The thieves also took a number of batteries, coolers and pocket knives.
"I've been in business over 63 years and have never been broken into," Sterling added. "It's kind of sad when this kind of thing happens in a small town like Stromsburg."
Customers who paid by check at Ericson's from March 1st-5th are advised that those checks have been stolen. Sterling welcomes those customers to come in and visit with him.
